Sumba Tour Package Program
Day 1 Arrival in Southwest Sumba – Ratenggaro Village – Weekuri
After you arrive at Tambolaka Airport, your 3-day, 2-night Sumba Tour Package begins. The first destination is the traditional village of Ratenggaro, located in Umbu Ngedo Village, Kodi Bangedo District, Southwest Sumba Regency. The name ‘Ratenggaro’ comes from two words: ‘rate,’ which means grave, and ‘garo,’ which is the name of the tribe.
The traditional village of Ratenggaro is unique because of its tower-shaped houses. These houses have tapered roofs and can be up to 30 meters tall. The shape symbolizes social status and respect for ancestral spirits. The main belief of the Ratenggaro indigenous villagers is Marapu, which worships the ancestors. This has influenced the shape of the Ratenggaro traditional house. None of the materials used to make the traditional houses are metal. These natural materials come from the surrounding nature, such as kadimbil wood, reeds, and rattan. This rule is in accordance with Ratenggaro’s own customs.
Furthermore, you can find megalithic stone graves in the Ratenggaro traditional village. One of these is the tomb of the founder of Ratenggaro. You can also see several menhirs on the beach behind the village too. You can only get this interesting trip if you follow the Sumba Trip Itinerary.
Next, you’ll visit Weekuri Lake, located in Kalenarogo Village, North Kodi District. The name ‘Weekuri’ comes from the Sumbanese language. ‘Wee’ means water, while ‘kuri’ means splash. This lake was formed when sea water splashed through the coral reefs to create a waterway that goes through the land. Did you know that this place was originally a lagoon? Sea water that seeped through the gaps in a coral cluster eventually formed Weekuri Lake. There are also several springs in the lake area.
The attraction of Weekuri Lake is the combination of various colors in one lake. You can see bluish-green water and some are bright blue. However, the uniqueness is that it’s brackish water or a combination of salty and fresh water. Then, there are areas of the lake that have cold water, but there are also areas where the water feels warm. Pretty cool, right?
Beside watching the beauty of the lake, you can also buy souvenirs at the shop near the lake. You can buy typical Sumbanese handicrafts such as bahar root, ikat woven fabric, and or traditional bracelets. Before heading back to the hotel, you can also enjoy a moment of sunset in the lake area. Don’t forget to capture every precious moment on the first day!
Day 2 Waikelo Sawah – Praijing Village – Watubela Beach
After a night of rest, it’s time to get back to the adventure with the Sumba Tour Package. Today there are 3 places to visit. The first is Waikelo Sawah, located in Tema Tana Village, Wewewa Timur District, Southwest Sumba Regency. The combination of waterfall, cave and rice fields will open your trip today.
The first attraction is the waterfall right at the mouth of the cave. The Waikelo Sawah is amazing. The cave behind it is about 3 meters high and 4 meters wide. Waikelo Sawah was built for power and irrigation. It has a spring that never runs dry. The rice fields around Waikelo Sawah are interesting too. Take pictures of this area before you go.
The second destination is Praijing Traditional Village, a hidden gem in the heart of West Sumba. It is located on a green hillside. The houses are traditional and use megalithic rocks. The walls are made of woven bamboo, and the roofs are made of tassels.
The locals will welcome you and introduce you to their culture and traditions. These include traditional ceremonies, dances, and religious rituals. After learning about the traditions, you’ll continue your journey.
After the waterfall and the village, you will visit the beach. The third destination today is Watubela Beach. This beach is located in Patiala Bawa Village, Lamboya District, West Sumba Regency. You can call it a hidden paradise.
Watubela Beach has clean white sand and clear sea water. You can also enjoy rock painting carvings on the white rock walls along the shoreline. Then, there’s a special attraction in the form of a small hill-like land. You can enjoy the full panorama of Watubela Beach from the top of the hill. This beach destination is great for taking selfies or photos oof the amazing scenery.
In addition, you can also take time to admire the panoramic sunset from the top of the hill and the shoreline. Save the moment before heading back to the hotel. Day two is over.
If you’re visiting in February, you might want to check out Pasola Lamboya Field. You can see the Pasola Celebration, which is a traditional war of the Sumbanese people. It’s a battle between two groups of horsemen. Both groups chase each other and throw wooden javelins at each other. This celebration is all about getting ready to work on the farmland. It’s also believed that the blood of the horsemen has magical powers to fertilize the farmland.
Day 3 Rumah Budaya Sumba – Airport Transfer Out
On the third day of the Sumba Tour Package, there’s still one more place to visit. After breakfast at the hotel and checkout, you’ll be invited to visit Rumah Budaya Sumba (Sumba Culture House), which is the last stop on the tour. Rumah Budaya Sumba is located in Radamata, Tambolaka City, Southwest Sumba Regency.
The Rumah Budaya Sumba has typical Sumba regional ornaments. The building also has original Sumbanese accents and is surrounded by Marapu stone carvings. Furthermore, the Rumah Budaya Sumba is not just a place to stay; it’s also a museum where tourists can learn about the art, culture, architecture, and social conditions of the Sumbanese people. In the museum, you can see the relics of Sumba’s indigenous traditions and traditional tools and ancient jewelry. Unfortunately, you may not be allowed to take photos inside the museum. So, you’ll get to experience the museum for yourself.
